Funeral webcasts
A funeral webcast allows people to attend a funeral virtually, from anywhere in the world. The funeral service is livestreamed over the internet, and anyone that wants to watch it is given private login details.
Unfortunately, as funeral webcasts have become more common, so have scammers that try to profit off them.
What is a funeral webcast scam?
Scammers will take information about a genuine funeral and create links to a ‘webcast’ of the service. They will ask for your credit card details and payment so you can ‘buy’ login details to watch the webcast. These login details will be fake and will not allow you to view the service.
Once you have given your card details, the scammer is able to keep hold of these and use them.

How to spot a funeral webcast scam
If you come across anyone that is trying to charge you to ‘book a place’ to watch a funeral webcast, this is a scam and you should report it.
Cardiff Council and Obitus will never ask you to pay a fee to watch a funeral webcast or recording. Any links and login information to the service webcast will be given to you by the funeral director or funeral venue.
If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a funeral webcast, please contact the funeral arranger or the funeral venue.
You can find out more information about funeral webcasts scams and how to spot them on the National Association of Funeral Directors website.
